Salon Resource Group
Founded in 1967 by Mr. Wayne Drew, we began our journey as the Golden Clipper, an innovative concept in full service hair care for men during a time when men traditionally visited their local barber shop for a cut and shave. In 1973, we transitioned into full service salons serving both men and women – the Head Shoppe was born!
Since then, we have grown to more than 18 salons operating under six diverse brands: The Head Shoppe, Brilliante by the Head Shoppe, HS Studio Salon Spa, Vitality Medi Spa, and HDC Hair & Esthetics School of Cosmetology. We are a locally owned and operated company that has been established for over 50 years. With over 300 associates throughout Nova Scotia and New Brunswick, we are the largest single employer of beauty professionals in Atlantic Canada.
1967
The Golden Clipper
We began our journey as the Golden Clipper, an innovative concept in full-service haircare for men during a time when men traditionally visited their local barbershop for a cut and shave.
1971
Trained Stylists
Became the first salon operator to also own a hairstyling school that trained men’s “hairstylists”.
1973
The Head Shoppe
The Head Shoppe brand was born, offering full-service salons serving both men and women.
1984
A day spa opens
Estetica opened, a high-end Day Spa in Halifax. Today, this has evolved to Vitality Medi Spa, offering a variety of medical esthetic and surgical services.
1984
New Management
Peter Mahoney was hired to manage the growth of the company, later becoming president and purchasing the company in 1995. Glenn Baker joined as Vice President in 1996.
1985
Franchised
Franchising was introduced to enable expansion. By early 1990, the Head Shoppe was the largest chain of hairstyling salons in the Maritimes. Former associates of the company currently own all franchises.
1995
Summit!
First annual Summit! Established a 3-day retreat to bring all associates together for training, education, celebration, and recognition.
2005
High-end spa
Opened a new high-end urban day spa brand offering hairstyling and esthetic services.
2008
Rewards program
Salon Rewards launched! Points could be earned and redeemed on both services and retail – almost unheard of at the time!
2011
Vibe Salon partners with SRG
Owners of the established Vibe Salon formed a partnership with SRG. In 2023, Vibe became the second Vitality Medi Spa location, now known as Vitality Bedford.
2016
Going green
Joined forces with Green Circle Salons, a program designed to recycle and divert salon waste from landfills & waterways.
2022
Brilliante
The Head Shoppe brand received a face lift in the form of the newly redesigned Brilliante by the Head Shoppe, located in the Halifax Shopping Centre.
Peter Mahoney, Owner & President
Salon Resource Group
Mahoney has been teaching financial and business principles to salon professionals for more than seventeen years and is one of the most respected management consultants in the salon industry today. His true passion for people shows when he explains that the true high point of his career was not teaching at UCLA, speaking at Redken Symposium or earning the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award; instead it was meeting so many incredible people throughout his time in the industry.

I bought into a student consulting company and ended up doing a six-week review of the industry in Atlantic Canada for the local Redken distributor. [Zig Ziglar] spoke about how you can have anything you want in life if you just help enough people get what they want. As a non-hairdresser that moment changed my life because I thought, ‘I don’t need to know how to cut hair; I just need to help others get what they want, and that I can do!’”
